The Things I Learned In My First Year of Lampworking
I learned a number of things in my first year of lampworking, and, while many were useful techniques, many others were ... purely accidental. Among other things, I learned: 1. If there is a yellow jacket in your studio, it will wait to show itself until you have almost finished the most intricate bead you have made all day. It will then show great interest in your nose. 2. My cats are NOT smart enough not to stick their tails in the torch. 3. If you are a woman, never wear a bra while torching. Glass gets stuck in the oddest places. 4. In line with #3, glass can and will go down your turtleneck, up your sleeve, in your ear, and all manner of other places where you are sure a hot glass shard will never be able to reach. 5. When you drop a hot marble on a linoleum floor, you have at most a second before you have a nice little bonfire. 6. The neighbor or postal worker will come by with something that must be done now right after you have made an initial wind of your most expensive glass. 7. Cussing at your bead release does not make it stick better. I promise. 8. The cat will come in with a dead rodent and drop it in your lap while you are finishing a very delicate glass sculpture. You can concentrate on glass even though the cold tail is hanging down your bare leg. 9. Your propane will never run out during the day, or between beads. It will run out at three in the morning on a rainy night as you have half-finished the best bead you made that session. 10. People will always rave over the bead you thought was mule puke, while completely ignoring your favorite set. There are many other lessons from a lampworker's first year, but these are among the most memorable. |
