Quick Photo Editing in GIMP

Recently I switched to a Linux operating system on my home computer, largely so that I could use GIMP. GIMP, like UBUNTU and other Linux operating systems, is free. Don't let "free" fool you into thinking that GIMP is worthless. It has as much functionality as the full version of Adobe Photoshop, and is fast and flexible. I have not even begun to tap its potential.

For web pages or ETSY, here is my fast and dirty photo editing procedure using GIMP.

1. I begin with a clear, stable, well-lit shot. I set my beads on a matte glass set on top of a plain sheet of typing paper, and place them either in a homemade light tent or outside on my back porch. My camera is on a tripod, and I use the timer function to eliminate all shake and the macro setting to get good close-up shots. For shots oriented straight down, I set my tripod's legs to be assymetrical, so the camera leans over the beads and their background. I take my shots at the highest resolution I possibly can.

2. Once I am happy with my shots, I upload them and open GIMP.

3. I begin by cropping, using the "Select" tool and then choosing Image Crop to Selection.

4. I set the white balance using Colors -- Levels. I can also play with the other color channels here, but generally using the eyedropper to click on a portion of the background that should be white works.

5. I run Filters -- Enhance -- Unsharp Mask to make my image crisp.

6. The last modification is to resize the image. I use Image -- Scale for that. For ETSY photos I make the longest edge 1000 pixels in length.

7. Finally, I save the file. End of story ... and a much sharper photo!

If you can, give GIMP a try. It is simple, intuitive, and immensely powerful.

I'm a long-term fan of the GIMP, but seldom hear of it being put to practical use. there is a book devoted to it by Rod Taylor which is worth having (Australian Beginner's Guide to Photo-Editing: Maximedia).
