Freecycle
Many people already know about Freecycle, but if you don't, you should. Freecycle is actually a network of communities -- sometimes several in a large metro area -- dedicated to keeping useful things out of landfills. It works thusly: If you have something you no longer want or need, but which could be used by another, you would post its description on Freecycle. If someone can use the item (s), you will get reply emails (screened by the Freecycle network), and you can pick a recipient and arrange a time and place to exchange the item. (Please use common sense while doing this!). Freecycle is not about giving only to the needy. Someone very well heeled may come pick up your stuff, and that's fine--you didn't want it any longer, and they did want it. The goal, after all, is to reduce waste by extending the useful life of items. Freecycle is also not about giving away things that you wouldn't even be able to donate to Goodwill. When an item has reached the end of its useful life, it's okay to bin it! (However, I have seen items offered that could not be used for their intended purpose but which worked well for another purpose--I picked up a lot of old, ripped towels to use to line the bed of my handicapped Welsh Corgi.) Like everything else in the world, Freecycle is not guaranteed. Sometimes nobody wants your items, and other times several people decide they each want your item yet nobody comes around to get it. However, it works enough that it makes a superb practice for any person or household committed to reducing waste. |

From my local Freecycle group [Glasgow] this morning there is this: OFFER: 32" Toshiba Television with Stand OFFER: bunk beds. TAKEN: Ikea computer desk OFFERED: shower seat Taken: Zanussi Freestanding Electric Cooker Offer: Bag of baby boys clothes 0-3 months Wanted: Mercedes E Class manual 1999 Offered: 8 Foot Trampoline and Enclosure OFFER: IKEA KARLANDA 2 SEATER BED SETEE This is quite a short daily list, sometimes there are three of four times as many items. You meet all kinds of people through Freecycle, in Glasgow there are even companies which recycle their office equipment and computers this way; no disposal costs, someone comes and collects it, and it's already written off on the balance sheet. Plenty of middle-class, comfortably off people collect as well as give. There's no shame in it like there might be for some if benefiting from charity, as we are all giving and receiving. The environment is the big winner, and we should all be glad of that.
